Children’s Online Reading Challenges

Did you and your child enjoy the 2020 Summer Reading Challenge on Beanstack a few months back? Well, you’re in luck! Glendale Library, Arts & Culture is now offering two year-round programs to encourage reading for children ages 0 through 8th grade. Let us introduce 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten and 500 Books Before High School!

1,000 Books Before Kindergarten: For ages 0 through preschool

You may be familiar with our 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program from pre-pandemic days. We are happy to report that the program is now fully online through Beanstack! Read any book to your baby, toddler, or preschooler. The goal is to read 1,000 books before your child starts Kindergarten. One thousand books may seem daunting, but it is actually very attainable. If you read just one book a night, you will have read about 365 books in a year. That’s 730 books in two years and 1,095 books in three years. Reading aloud to your child is the best way to nurture their language and brain development, foster a lifelong love of reading, and prepare them for reading and writing success in school and beyond.

500 Books Before High School: For grades K through 8

The Beanstack program, 500 Books Before High School, is a brand new reading program where you can challenge yourself to read or listen to any book of your choosing to complete the goal of reading 500 Books Before High School. This program is meant for school-aged children to build greater confidence in their skills and develop a lifelong reading habit. While participating in 500 Books Before High School, you will earn small tokens of success along the way, a certificate, and a free book that you can retrieve once the library safely reopens.
