Author Talk: David Heska Wanbli Weiden
In celebration of Native American Heritage Month, Glendale Library, Arts & Culture will be hosting author David Heska Wanbli Weiden to discuss his new mystery novel, Winter Counts, in a virtual conversation with award-winning author Marcie R. Rendon. Weiden’s book tells the story of a local Native American enforcer on the Rosebud Indian Reservation who becomes obsessed with finding and stopping the dealer who is bringing increasingly dangerous drugs into his community. It is a Native thriller, an examination of the broken criminal justice on reservations, and a meditation on Native identity. The novel has received rave reviews from the New York Times, Publishers Weekly, Library Journal, USA Today, Los Angeles Times, among other publications.
Mr. Weiden is an enrolled member of the Sicangu Lakota nation and is also the author of the children’s book Spotted Tail, a biography of the great Lakota leader and winner of the 2020 Spur Award from the Western Writers of America. He received his MFA in Creative Writing from the Institute of American Indian Arts, his law degree from the University of Denver Sturm College of Law, and his Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin. He is currently Professor of Native American Studies and Political Science at Metropolitan State University of Denver.
