New and Exciting Virtual Library Services for Teens

Teen Book Talk with Melissa

Teen Book Review with Selena

As part of our commitment toward expanded online services, we would like to introduce Teen Story Starters, Book Talks & Book Reviews, the latest offerings from Glendale Library, Arts & Culture’s teen services team.

Story Starters highlight young adult books by featuring audio excerpts that offer a sneak peek into the style, content, and themes of selected titles. Sampling books can give readers the opportunity to test-run a particular author and consider their style, language, and other ways in which they may appeal to their own reading preferences. Sampling also enables readers to try out new genres and subjects that they might never have expected to enjoy. Whether you're into fiction or non-fiction, Story Starters are a fun way to widen your reading horizons.

Book Talks, staff videos posted on YouTube, are a great way to get a general idea of a book, and learn about the world that the author has created. What is this place and its design? Who are the characters and what knowledge do they possess? What secrets do they keep? What is the nature of the story’s conflict, and why do the characters feel compelled to act? As the setting, characters, and major themes of the story unfold, a spark of curiosity begins to glow, leaving the reader wanting to know more!

Book Reviews, also found on YouTube, describe the basic premise of a book and its genre, and introduce the personalities, perspectives, and motivations of the characters. The reviewer discusses the author's tone, or manner in which they approach the theme and subject to create a particular mood. Book Reviews also examine external forces, such as social, economic, racial, ethnic, or cultural influences that work to shape the setting, the characters, and the conflict of the story. Toward the end of each segment, the reviewer suggests options for reading or listening to books, such as CloudLibrary, Hoopla, Freading, and TeenBookCloud.
