April is Armenian Genocide Remembrance Month

April is Armenian Genocide Remembrance Month and Glendale Library, Arts & Culture is paying tribute to Armenians of the local community in a celebration of history and culture and in recognition of the community’s struggle for inclusion and equity.

In honor of Armenian Genocide Remembrance Month, and as part of the Be the Change series, the library is hosting author talks, an Armenian History Challenge for children, and much more. The below programs are generously sponsored by the City of Glendale Arts and Culture Commission through funding from the City of Glendale Urban Art Fund.

Programming for Adults

The first event to kick off the month is a free virtual author talk with John Lee, Ara Zada, and Kate Leahy on April 1 at 6:30pm. They will discuss their book Lavash: The bread that launched 1,000 meals, plus salads, stews, and other recipes from Armenia with graphic designer Helena Grigorian. On Saturday, April 3rd at 6:30pm, watch a comedy sketch with comedic actor and playwright Lory Tatoulian as he creates comedy magic in this special Be the Change video. This virtual event will premiere on the library’s YouTube channel.

On Thursday, April 8 at 6:30pm a pre-recorded conversation, “Armenia, Artsakh, Diaspora – Memory, Identity, and Responsibility: A Conversation with Eric Hacopian and Salpi Ghazarian” will premiere on the Armenian Genocide Remembrance Month page and the library’s YouTube channel. Learn more here.

On Saturday, April 10 at 6:30pm author and lecturer Khatchig Mouradian, Ph.D., will discuss his book, The Resistance Network in conversation with filmmaker and screenwriter Eric Nazarian. On Thursday, April 15 at 6:30pm, architect, designer and artist Vasken Brudian discusses his brand Ardēan with graphic designer Harry Vorperian in “Creating Design Industry in Armenia.” This virtual event will premiere on the library’s YouTube channel. Click here to learn more.

·       Armenian History Month Beanstack Reading Challenge – All month-long enjoy a variety of activities such as leaning to write your name in Armenian, storytimes in English and Armenian, Armenian history and symbols, drawing and crafts, cooking, music, and more. Register here.

Virtual ReflectSpace Exhibit Sites of Fracture: Diasporic Imaginings of Occupied Artsakh

Sites of Fracture: Diasporic Imaginings of Occupied Artsakh, launching April 19, is a virtual exhibition that brings together diasporic Armenian artists—from the United States, Canada, and Germany—to create a collective counter-narrative, to forces of occupation and cultural erasure in the Republic of Artsakh.

Artists and cultural workers in the exhibit include Kamee Abrahamian, Ali Cat / Entangled Roots Press, Silvina Der-Meguerditchian, Naré Mkrtchyan, Nelli Sargsyan, She Loves Collective, Scout Tufankjian, Anahid Yahjian and Yerazad Coalition.

Sites of Fracture: Diasporic Imaginings of Occupied Artsakh is co-curated by Mashinka Firunts Hakopian, Ara Oshagan, and Anahid Oshagan. Visit the exhibit here starting April 19, 2021.
