Women’s Mental Health

These days, it seems we are all juggling more than our share of responsibilities. That seems to go double for women. Many are holding down jobs, caring for loved ones, staying active in their communities, trying to maintain social lives and seeking to maintain their health and wellbeing at the same time.  For women especially, it is important to remember that physical health and mental health are intricately connected.

Why is women's mental health important? Mood and mental health play an important role in many aspects of women's lives. They may affect relationships, self-esteem, work performance and even physical health. Research shows possible connections between certain mental health conditions and physical ailments, such as heart disease and gastrointestinal issues.

Why is women's mental health overlooked? There is a stigma surrounding women's mental health.  Women may be less likely than men to seek treatment after experiencing symptoms of mental illness. This is due to “internalized or self-stigma” that results from their self-image being formed by how others perceive them.

How does society affect women's mental health? Pressure caused by multiple societal roles and overworking has also been shown to account for poor mental health in women. Women are also more likely to be discriminated against as a consequence of their gender when compared to men. This could increase their chances of developing a mental health condition.

How does physical health affect mental health? Physical injuries can lead to mental health issues, and vice versa. Physical activity can bring health benefits including elevated mood and reduced stress and healthy eating also can improve mental health. Good physical health leaves a personal feeling better in the long term.

What factors affect physical and mental health?

  • childhood abuse, trauma, or neglect.

  • social isolation or loneliness.

  • experiencing discrimination and stigma, including racism.

  • social disadvantage, poverty or debt.

  • bereavement (losing someone close to you)

  • severe or long-term stress.

  • having a long-term physical health condition.

Why physical health is important. Working on your physical fitness and health will not only add years to your life, it can also improve your mood and help prevent mental illness. People who are healthy and active feel more energetic throughout the day, sleep better, feel more relaxed and think more positively about themselves and life in general. Unfortunately, failing to look after yourself physically results not just in physical deterioration but in mental health challenges as well. Fortunately, this is not a matter of prioritizing one type of health over the other. With a bit of mindful attention, you can make strides in improving both your mental and physical wellbeing.

If you are experiencing symptoms of any mental health condition, it is important to contact a medical professional who can help you. Eating right and exercising can help some people improve their mental health. However, others may need medication or counseling to see changes. By partnering with a medical expert, you will be better able to find out what is right for you.
