Students from Different Parts of the World Connect at the Montrose Library
Students from different parts of the world have come together to learn and further improve their English language skills at the Montrose Intermediate/Advanced ESL class taught by Instructor Sherry Tayor. Currently, the class is focusing on spelling, pronunciation, and reading comprehension. The students in the ESL class often work in pairs or small groups which turn lessons into lively, fun activities.
The class has also recently begun a book club. As their first book, they have selected to read Callings: The Purpose and Passion of Work by Dave Isay. The stories in this book focus on the different path's individuals have taken to find their jobs, careers, or callings. In one of Isay’s stories, “The Bookmobile”, a young girl named Storm Reyes discovers her love of literature and helping others through her local library’s bookmobile. In the story she finds refuge in books and learns that “the more you know about something, the less you will fear it.” Ms. Taylor says that it is a pleasure to teach the class at Montrose and that the class is “fortunate to have students from many countries around the globe. This allows us to celebrate our diversity through a variety of assignments. We see both commonality and differences from our individual cultures.” Students in Ms. Taylor’s class hail from Iran, Armenia, Guatemala, South Korea, and Russia.
The students at Montrose work hard, encourage one another, and have made new friendships. This is a great group of enthusiastic students who truly enjoy learning and who have found commonality and community through their shared interest and passion for education.
